If you've been looking for a comprehensive beginning woodworking class, this five-week evening class has it all. Designed for those with little or no prior experience in woodworking, you'll get a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge needed to pursue more advanced projects.

You'll learn about project design and how to select and prepare materials using the most common machines in the shop, as well as how to square rough lumber (the first step to most woodworking projects) using the jointer, planer and table saw. You'll also learn how to do a proper glue-up, and use the planer, band saw, and router table to shape board faces and edges. Finally, you'll sand and finish your piece with multiple coats of shellac.

Although Michael Hillinger began the craft at a young age, woodworking came into serious focus for him after he retired from a long career in software development. He upgraded his shop, spent many hours (re)learning woodworking tools and techniques, and began to create furniture for charity auctions, including benches, tables, bookcases and chairs. Beautiful lathe-turned ornaments, bowls, candle holders and more can be found on his Etsy site, WoodWorking For A Cause where proceeds from sales are donated to designated nonprofits. When he's not sharing his considerable talents as a teacher, Michael can be found - where else? - in his woodshop, making sawdust, noise and perhaps things of beauty.
