Metal Sculpture That Takes Form (W23)

Instructor: Troy Woods

This class will focus on the use of welding, cutting and shaping techniques of metal for artistic expression. Each session will begin by looking at an image of a sculptor’s work as a takeoff point for a personal journey into three-dimensional art. A brief discussion of the artist’s intent and technique will get the inspirational juices flowing and ease you into your own idea or concept, including construction and safety considerations. As student's ideas progress, time will be made for regular peer discussion of everyone's concepts to ensure positive and helpful feedback. $85 materials fee applied at check-out.

Raised in Lebanon, NH, Troy Woods is a third-generation wood carver whose smooth wood and metal sculptures defy the nature of their medium. The lustrous hardwoods that he uses seem to melt and flow in space, sublimely transforming his materials into other substances entirely. Through masterful craftsmanship, Woods creates an elegant sense of calm, echoing nature while confounding our expectations of nature. Woods earned his B.F.A. from the University of Houston, Summa Cum Laude, has received many awards for his work, completed numerous corporate commissions, and has work in private collections.
